It's such a glorious time of the year!Already, we can begin to feel the expectation in the air! Christmas decorations are all around us. We might even find ourselves humming Christmas songs for no reason at all as we await the arrival of that small child born in a manger.
I have a favorite song that flips my Christmas switch each year; The Little Drummer Boy. There's something about the sound of it - I prefer the Harry Simeon Chorale version of the song - and the words create just the right atmosphere of the anticipation visitors to Bethlehem must have felt. I like the pure simplicity of the song's message:
"Come, they told me pa-rum-pa-pum-pum. A new born king to see pa-rum-pa-pum-pum."
Like the little drummer boy, we have no proper gift to bring to this new born king. But as the song reveals, his gift was manifested in the simple talent he had all along....the simple playing of his drum as a welcome into the world.
May we come as we are with our simple gifts to greet the Messiah this Christmas season. And may we share the gift of Christ with those we meet throughout the year.
